Little Tortuga - Release Date 1/31/17

"With such influences as Doc Watson, Chet Atkins, Big Mama Thornton, Bonnie Raitt, and Muddy Waters, the band is fast becoming a known name in the blues circuit. No one will dare say they aren’t paying their dues with two albums, the latest titled Little Tortuga, and one EP under their belt as well as more than 25 gigs coming up over the next few months alone." continue reading

"Blind Willie Johnson’s Keep Your Lamp Trimmed And Burning gets a wonderful interpretation next. Their down home reverential version is very true to the original recordings and the feelings from the vocals can actually raise the hair on your neck. This is one of the best songs on the album, and one of the best interpretations of Johnson’ song I’ve ever heard."  continue reading

"Scotch Hollow make roots music catchy and sexy again. Nowadays the latter element is often missing, with musicians overthinking things too much. Keeping it deceptively simple is an artform. Making it swing is even harder. They got it right on both counts." continue reading

"Scotch Hollow – Little Tortuga (Self-produced): Scotch Hollow is a roots band that mixes a generous helping of country twang with just enough blues to stir the pot. The group was founded by Mark Verbeck (guitar, songwriter) and vocalist Carly Martin. Based in Kansas City, the group now includes JD Linn (bass), Benjamin Scholz (drums, percussion), Brady Buster (harmonica) and Joel Schuman (piano). Verbeck wrote all but three songs and those were written by Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf and Blind Willie Johnson. The performances are solid and spare as one would expect for this style of music. They certainly can raise a little sand in the down-home way. The disc is expected for release in April, but click here for a live slice of a song on the new disc. "

"Folk Alliance in Kansas City, Missouri is in full swing this week. Local band Scotch Hollow stick to the mood and rhythms that rock their city as they add “Kansas City Pepper” to the Folk stew brewing on the Top Ten. The tune is from their recent release, Little Tortuga." Listen and buy “Kansas City Pepper” byScotch Hollow from AMAZON andiTunes"

"If you’re looking for some good-time, get-down groove – a bit of funky soul mixed with a slightly country twang, you’ve found it in this marvel from Kansas City’s Scotch Hollow and their new album, Little Tortuga.  A (currently) 6-piece outfit, they know how to move and slink along in a very warm and smile-inducing manner.  Nevermind the fact that the album sounds great, it swings and you cannot help but get a vibe, especially listening to lead singer Carley Martin’s rich voice, a buoyancy which sometimes gives off shades of Bonnie Raitt.  The playing by her comrades is stellar and fluid – this is one to listen to, start to finish..." continue reading

"The performances are as solid and spare as one would expect for this style of music. They certainly can raise a little sand in the down-home way. Website here, Facebook hereThe opening track on Little Tortuga is 'Hocus Pocus' a vibrant country rocker with a generous helping of blues feeling adding to the vibe. Scotch Hollow deliver roots music with quality, energy and commitment. "Kansas City, MO blues rock band Scotch Hollow has just dropped its sophomore album, Little Tortuga. Scotch Hollow is a roots band that mixes a generous helping of country twang with just enough blues to stir the pot. The group was founded by Mark Verbeck (guitar, songwriter) and vocalist Carly Martin, who met at the Berklee School of Music. "Little Tortuga is the latest album from Kansas City based band Scotch Hollow. The eleven tracks are a stunning displays of vocal prowess and instrumental virtuosity. Taking roots and blues, keeping it simple, while delivering depth of performance that  would rival Challenger Deep, this is a band for which the term formidable is a gross understatement. Put this music on, sit back in a nice comfortable chair, get a beer and some food, then proceed to get your ass kicked. Oh yes, hold on brother, you're goin down. To call this a must have is to say breathing is underrated. Stream and buy Little Tortuga at the link below."
